Biography

Lee Jung-eun is a South Korean actress born on January 23, 1970, whose career stretches across television, film and theater. International viewers may immediately recognize her as Moon-gwang, the former housekeeper at the center of a major turning point in Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite (2019). But that famous performance is only one part of an extensive career filled with emotionally complex supporting characters and memorable leading roles.

Lee became a familiar presence in Korean screen productions through performances that could be funny, compassionate, unsettling or deeply moving. Her earlier credits include The Wailing, Okja, Mr. Sunshine and Familiar Wife. In The Light in Your Eyes (2019), she played the protagonist’s mother, contributing to a family story that later became known for its powerful emotional reveal. The performance won her a Baeksang Arts Award for Best Supporting Actress in television.

Her role in Parasite brought international recognition, and she won Best Supporting Actress at the 2019 Blue Dragon Film Awards. On television, she continued appearing in very different genres, from the neighborhood drama When the Camellia Blooms to the psychological thriller Strangers from Hell. In Our Blues (2022), her portrayal of Jeong Eun-hui explored friendships, maturity and the unfinished emotions of adulthood.

Lee also appeared as a senior nurse in Daily Dose of Sunshine (2023), a series focused on the challenges faced by psychiatric ward staff and patients. Her double-generation performance as Lim Sun in Miss Night and Day (2024) leaned into fantasy comedy, while The Frog, Light Shop and Heavenly Ever After showed different sides of her screen presence.

In Doctor X: Mafia in White (2026), Lee portrays Jang Hee-sook, the sharp businesswoman who runs the medical staffing agency responsible for placing Gye Su-jeong at Guseo University Hospital. Her character provides a crucial connection between the fiercely independent surgeon and the hospital establishment. Across Lee Jung-eun’s filmography, the consistent strength is her ability to make character relationships feel specific, even when the story shifts completely in tone.
