Kim Ji-won

Biography

Kim Ji-won is a South Korean actress born on October 19, 1992, whose K-drama career includes some of the most recognizable romances of the past decade. From the sharp-tongued Rachel Yoo in The Heirs to the emotionally guarded Hong Hae-in in Queen of Tears, she has built a filmography that moves between romantic comedy, intimate character drama, fantasy and high-stakes thrillers.

Her route into entertainment began with talent training and early appearances in music videos and commercials. She reached a wider television audience with the sitcom High Kick! 3 and appeared in To the Beautiful You before gaining major attention as Rachel Yoo in the 2013 teen drama The Heirs. That role introduced her to international fans as an actress capable of making even an antagonist memorable.

In Descendants of the Sun (2016), Kim played military doctor Yoon Myeong-joo, balancing professional discipline with a romance shaped by military expectations. Her next major breakthrough came through Fight for My Way (2017), where her portrayal of aspiring announcer Choi Ae-ra brought humor, frustration and ambition to an ordinary young woman’s story. The performance earned recognition at the KBS Drama Awards.

Kim later took on Tanya in the fantasy epic Arthdal Chronicles and Lee Eun-o in Lovestruck in the City. In My Liberation Notes (2022), she portrayed Yeom Mi-jeong, a quiet office worker whose desire for connection and freedom gave the drama much of its emotional weight. Her 2024 role as department-store heiress Hong Hae-in in Queen of Tears, opposite Kim Soo-hyun, became another defining part of her career.

In SBS’s 2026 medical noir Doctor X: Mafia in White, Kim plays Gye Su-jeong, an extraordinarily skilled freelance surgeon who refuses to accept the corrupt rules of Guseo University Hospital. The character marks a shift from her best-known romantic roles toward a hospital-centered conflict about competence, power and medical ethics. For viewers discovering Kim through Doctor X, her earlier dramas offer a revealing look at her range, especially Fight for My Way, My Liberation Notes and Queen of Tears.
