Biography

Son Hyun-joo is a veteran South Korean actor born on June 24, 1965, recognized for a long-running career in television and film. If you have watched Korean crime dramas, there is a good chance you have already seen him play someone whose decisions carry enormous consequences: a determined investigator, a political figure, a father, or an authority figure struggling with the cost of power.

Son appeared in Korean television long before the international streaming boom introduced many of his later projects to global audiences. One important career milestone was The Chaser (2012), in which he portrayed detective Baek Hong-seok, a father seeking answers after a devastating loss. The performance earned major acting recognition, including the Grand Prize at the SBS Drama Awards, and helped cement his reputation for intense dramatic roles.

He went on to appear in Empire of Gold (2013) and Three Days (2014), playing South Korea’s president in the latter political thriller. In the film Hide and Seek (2013), he took on the central role in a psychological mystery, while The Chronicles of Evil (2015) and Ordinary Person (2017) further expanded his crime-film credits.

Modern K-drama fans may know him particularly well as Kang Do-chang in The Good Detective (2020) and its 2022 sequel. The series follows police officers dealing with difficult investigations while confronting institutional pressures. He also appeared in Itaewon Class as Park Sung-yeol, in Captivating the King as Kang Hang-soon, and in Your Honor (2024) as Song Pan-ho.

In Doctor X: Mafia in White (2026), Son plays Bu Seung-kwon, the director of a struggling branch of Guseo University Hospital. His character’s ambition to restore the hospital places him within the same compromised hierarchy challenged by the independent surgeon Gye Su-jeong. It is a fitting addition to Son’s career of portraying men caught between public responsibility, personal ambition and difficult moral choices.
