Biography
In I’m Not a Robot, Chae Soo-bin plays Jo Ji-ah, a woman hired to pass herself off as a humanoid robot. That’s already a tricky comic setup, but the more interesting task is letting a real person’s feelings leak through a supposedly artificial performance. The role is a useful introduction to Soo-bin’s screen presence: she can play the absurdity of a situation without forgetting the person trapped inside it.
Chae Soo-bin (채수빈) was born on July 10, 1994. Her early career included the 2013 stage production His and Her Thursday and the 2014 film My Dictator. Television followed quickly. In 2015 she played Han Eun-soo in House of Bluebird and Kwon Soo-ah in the school drama Cheer Up!, moving between a family ensemble and a story about competition among teenagers. She received the Best New Actress prize at the 2015 KBS Drama Awards. It was early recognition for an actor who hadn’t settled into one kind of character.
Love in the Moonlight (2016) brought a much larger costume-drama audience. As Jo Ha-yeon, she entered the royal-court romance with a character whose position carried expectations as well as feelings. The following year’s Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People gave her another period role, Song Ga-ryung, but with different dramatic weight. Her performance in Rebel earned an Excellence Award at the 2017 MBC Drama Awards. Those parts helped establish her, yet her next choices showed she wasn’t interested in remaining in palace stories.
In Strongest Deliveryman (2017), she became Lee Dan-ah, an outspoken delivery worker trying to build a future on her own terms. Then I’m Not a Robot put her opposite Yoo Seung-ho as Jo Ji-ah and the android stand-in Aji 3. The switch from blunt workplace energy to elaborate romantic deception showed why casting her only as the gentle second lead would have missed something. Her humor often comes from how seriously the character takes an impossible predicament.
Where Stars Land (2018) shifted the setting to an airport. As employee Han Yeo-reum, she helped drive a workplace romance alongside Lee Je-hoon, and the role earned her an Excellence Award at the SBS Drama Awards. A Piece of Your Mind (2020) went quieter: Han Seo-woo, a classical-music recording engineer, becomes involved in a story shaped by grief, technology and incomplete conversations. The contrast between these dramas is worth noticing. One is busy with rules, colleagues and daily mishaps; the other asks for patience with what characters cannot easily say.
She also moved across streaming and film projects. Netflix’s The Fabulous (2022) cast her as Pyo Ji-eun, a fashion-industry publicist balancing demanding work, friendship and an unresolved romance. Her films include Sweet & Sour (2021), Hijack 1971 (2024), in which she plays Ok-soon, and Omniscient Reader: The Prophecy (2025), where she plays Yoo Sang-ah. These are different-sized parts in very different stories, not one continuous romantic-comedy lane.
When the Phone Rings (2024) offered one of her clearest dramatic tests. Hong Hee-joo is a sign-language interpreter in an emotionally distant marriage with Baek Sa-eon, played by Yoo Yeon-seok. A threatening call destabilizes the relationship, but Hee-joo’s struggle to communicate matters as much as the thriller machinery. Soo-bin said she practiced sign language extensively for the part, including preparation before filming. She won a 2024 MBC Drama Awards Excellence Award for the series. The performance makes silence an active part of the conflict rather than a gap between spoken lines.
In October 2026, she appeared as screenwriter Na Bo-bae opposite Kim Young-kwang in Netflix’s Take Charge of My Heart, released on October 9. Bo-bae’s electrical powers can recharge a man’s failing artificial heart, creating a romance where physical closeness has a literal consequence. It sounds miles away from Hee-joo’s restrained world. Look closer, though, and there’s a revealing thread: Soo-bin keeps returning to characters whose relationships depend on the difficult business of reaching another person, whether through a disguise, a language or an unexpected spark.
