Here’s what’s actually locked in: A Bona Fide Killer (유부녀 킬러) premieres Friday, July 31 at 9:50 p.m. KST on MBC, airing Fridays and Saturdays. Fourteen episodes, roughly 70 minutes each, with the finale set for September 12. International viewers get it on Viki. Domestic streaming runs through Wavve after broadcast.
The confirmed cast
Gong Hyo-jin plays Yoo Bo-na — manager of Sales Team 3 at Durumi Electronics on paper, the legendary one-shot-one-kill sniper “Kingfisher” in practice. She’s just wrapped a three-year childcare leave and is back on targets the courts let slip.
Jung Joon-won (Resident Playbook) is her husband Kwon Tae-sung, an investigative reporter assigned to work out why Kingfisher resurfaced. Lee Sang-yi plays Lee Dong-jin, a detective and Tae-sung’s closest friend, hunting the same person from the opposite side. Sung Dong-il completes the leads as Kim Bong-pal, Bo-na’s team leader — a man who reads as a worn-out salaryman and specializes in staging murders as accidents.
Supporting casting was confirmed through late June: Cha Mi-kyung as mother-in-law Ok Seon-ja, Ha Yul-ri as rookie Oh Hyun-nam, plus Kim Nam-hee, Moo Jin-sung, Lee Eun-saem, Choi Woo-sung, Seo Jung-yeon and Shin Hyun-soo.
Why Gong Hyo-jin’s new drama is a bigger deal than it looks
This is her first MBC drama in 15 years. The last one was The Greatest Love in 2011, which peaked above 20% nationwide back when that figure was still reachable. It’s also her first series since tvN’s When the Stars Gossip, and the first time she’s carried a straight action-thriller as sole lead.
The reunions stack up, too. She and Sung Dong-il haven’t shared a set since It’s Okay, That’s Love — about 12 years. She and Lee Sang-yi last worked together on When the Camellia Blooms, roughly seven.
One thing English-language coverage keeps blurring: the writer is Kim Eun-hee of Ghost Doctor and Live Up to Your Name — not the Kim Eun-hee behind Signal and Kingdom. Two different people, identical name. Korean outlets flag this routinely; most international write-ups don’t. Directing is Yoon Jong-ho (Lovely Runner, Times) alongside Kim Ji-hoon.
The webtoon timing is not a coincidence
The source is a Kakao webtoon written by YOON and illustrated by Gum, and here’s the part barely anyone has connected: Season 4 of the webtoon returns July 27 — four days before the drama premieres. Season 3 wrapped last September. The official English translation runs on Tapas, so anyone wanting to read ahead has a legitimate route.
Webtoon readers have also clocked a change. On theqoo, several commenters noted the drama appears to have expanded the husband and in-law material well beyond what the original leaned on. Whether that’s an improvement or a dilution is the first real argument this show will start.
Speaking of which — the July 9 teaser thread on theqoo cleared 3,000 comments, and the split there was telling. Plenty of “this looks fun ㅋㅋㅋ,” a handful of people grumbling the poster design feels a few years out of date. Warm reception, not blind hype.
What’s still unconfirmed
No Netflix or TVING deal has been announced. Ratings expectations are guesswork until Friday. MBC hasn’t published a formal press conference rundown as of July 25. Anything you see claiming a second season is speculation — the drama hasn’t aired a frame yet.
What to expect from episode one
Gong Hyo-jin told reporters on July 24 that the show doesn’t run in a straight line: chunks of the story arrive out of chronological order, and part of the appeal is assembling the puzzle backwards. Worth knowing going in, so episode one’s structure doesn’t read as sloppy when it’s deliberate.
Lee Sang-yi has framed his character’s bind plainly — Kingfisher is simultaneously his best friend’s wife and the criminal he’s chased for years. That collision is the engine of the whole thing.
One scheduling note with teeth: MBC picks up the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games from September 19, one week after this finale. The network needs a strong summer performer heading into that window, which means A Bona Fide Killer is carrying more weight for MBC than a typical Friday-Saturday slot.
