Dream to You: Hwang In Youp and Hyeri’s On-Screen Chemistry Takes a New Turn
Two episodes in, and Dream to You is already cracking the ice between its leads. Hwang In Youp and Hyeri have spent the ENA drama’s opening stretch playing former first loves who can barely stay in a room together — but the newest stills, released ahead of episode 3, show something different: Woo Soo Bin and Ju Yi Jae actually laughing.
A Slow-Burn Reunion Starts to Thaw
The photos catch Soo Bin flicking Yi Jae’s forehead while she squeezes her eyes shut, both of them cracking up the way they used to as teenagers. A second set shows Yi Jae standing in front of him with her hands clasped, clearly working up to ask him for something, while he watches her with an expression that’s harder to read than his usual playful chasing.
It’s a real jump from where episode 1 left things. Soo Bin handed Yi Jae the unfinished script for his film “Gyeongseong Love Song,” asked her flatly to do it with him, and got told she considers him her biggest regret — right before the two of them ended up in a wordless, rain-soaked standoff. Getting from that to forehead-flicking is exactly the shift Dream to You needed heading into its third episode.
Who Are Soo Bin and Yi Jae, Anyway?
For anyone just tuning in: Hwang In Youp plays Woo Soo Bin, a director who left Korea 15 years ago without keeping a promise to Yi Jae, chasing his father’s wish that he become a doctor instead. Hyeri plays Ju Yi Jae, a reporter who was searching for him when she was hurt in a traffic accident that changed the direction of her whole life. It’s the kind of first-love-interrupted premise Hwang In Youp has built a career on since “True Beauty,” and it plays right into the nostalgic, Deok Sun-adjacent warmth Hyeri has carried since “Reply 1988.”
The Ratings Tell a Messier Story
Here’s what the stills alone don’t tell you: Dream to You hasn’t had an easy start. Episode 1 opened at 2.7% nationwide (Nielsen Korea), a full 3.2 points under the 5.9% that “Doctor on the Edge” pulled for its finale in the same ENA Monday-Tuesday slot — the softest premiere the network has had all year. Oddly, the international response paints a kinder picture — Dream to You is holding a solid 8.1 out of 10 on MyDramaList from over a thousand ratings, which suggests the slow-burn pacing is landing better with overseas fans than with domestic broadcast viewers so far.
Fans Are Split, and That’s Half the Fun
Fan spaces are having two different conversations right now. One side is already swooning, replaying Soo Bin and Yi Jae’s earlier baseball-date scene as proof the leads have real spark. The other side, especially on Korean forums, isn’t convinced yet, arguing the chemistry still feels like it’s warming up rather than fully there.
Honestly, that split is kind of the point. This is a script built around two people who spent 15 years apart nursing real wounds — if they fell into easy comfort by episode 3, everything the production team has said about them needing time to heal wouldn’t mean much.
