Biography

Seo Hyun-jin is particularly good at playing characters who talk too much precisely when they are trying to hide something. Oh Hae-young in Another Miss Oh can be embarrassing, wounded and infuriating within the same scene. Her Yoon Seo-jung in Dr. Romantic conceals fear behind the urgency of medical work. Both performances came after a much longer career path than viewers discovering her through romantic comedy might realize.

Seo first worked as a singer in the girl group M.I.L.K. before transitioning to acting. Her early television years included parts in Hwang Jin-yi, The Duo and Feast of the Gods. Historical family drama The King’s Daughter, Soo Baek-hyang gave her a leading role as Seol-nan, and the food-centered comedy Let’s Eat 2 (2015) demonstrated that she could bring naturalistic energy to an everyday romantic story. These earlier projects are important in understanding her range: she had already worked across very different production styles before her biggest television breakthrough.

Another Miss Oh (2016) transformed her standing. The premise begins with the confusion of two women sharing a name, but the drama’s emotional force comes from Seo’s willingness to make ordinary insecurity and humiliation visible. Her character does not behave like an immaculate romantic heroine, and that honesty helped make the series memorable. She earned Best Actress at the 2017 Baeksang Arts Awards. Dr. Romantic (2016–17) followed almost immediately, with Seo as surgeon Yoon Seo-jung, whose professional talent is complicated by trauma and difficult relationships.

Another Miss Oh remains central to understanding why her dramatic approach works so well. The ordinary humiliations faced by Oh Hae-young are not treated as decorative obstacles before romance; they build an unflattering but sympathetic character whose emotional honesty gives the comedy its distinctive sting.

Temperature of Love (2017) offered a more reflective romance, while The Beauty Inside (2018) cast her as actress Han Se-gye, whose appearance changes unpredictably. The fantasy premise asks whether identity survives changes to how other people see a person. Black Dog (2019–20) placed Seo inside the pressures of a school faculty room as teacher Go Ha-neul. In Why Her? (2022), she became ambitious lawyer Oh Soo-jae, whose professional strength masks serious personal compromises. Netflix’s The Trunk (2024) put her in a guarded adult relationship as Noh In-ji. Seo’s career shows an actress who can turn the imperfections of supposedly successful women into the story’s greatest asset.
