Biography

The actor who made Chilbong’s one-sided devotion in Reply 1994 memorable later became the patient children’s surgeon in Hospital Playlist, an elegant historical swordsman in Mr. Sunshine and a deeply unsettling man in the thriller A Bloody Lucky Day. Yoo Yeon-seok’s range is impressive precisely because the characters rarely depend on the same surface charm to hold an audience’s attention.

Born Ahn Yeon-seok, he first appeared on film as the younger version of Yoo Ji-tae’s character in Park Chan-wook’s Oldboy (2003). He then worked through a variety of supporting roles, including movies such as Architecture 101 and A Werewolf Boy. The medical drama Gu Family Book and the nostalgia series Reply 1994 (2013) helped make him familiar to television audiences. In the latter, his Chilbong is a baseball player whose longstanding affection complicates the heroine’s romantic choices; the performance depends on restraint even when his feelings are obvious.

Warm and Cozy (2015) gave Yoo a lighter central romance as chef Baek Gun-woo on Jeju Island, while Dr. Romantic (2016–17) cast him as the ambitious young surgeon Kang Dong-joo. The latter placed him inside a medical story where career prestige and the duty to patients constantly collide. In Mr. Sunshine (2018), he became Gu Dong-mae, a swordsman whose harsh exterior hides complicated loyalty and attachment. It was one of his strongest deviations from sympathetic modern love interests.

Hospital Playlist is especially important in demonstrating his ensemble discipline. Ahn Jeong-won could have been reduced to the kind-hearted pediatrician, but small moments involving friendship, family and religious commitment create a more conflicted portrait. His gentleness operates differently from the menacing composure of A Bloody Lucky Day.

Hospital Playlist (2020–21) returned Yoo to medicine, this time as paediatric surgeon Ahn Jeong-won, a man whose compassionate work sits alongside spiritual questions and friendship with his fellow doctors. A Bloody Lucky Day (2023) challenged the audience to confront him as a dangerous passenger who turns an ordinary taxi ride into a nightmare. When the Phone Rings (2024–25) presented him as Baek Sa-eon, a political family spokesman at the centre of a troubled marriage and mystery. His film résumé includes The Royal Tailor, Steel Rain 2 and No Other Choice. Taken together, the roles show an actor who has learned to make politeness comforting in one drama and terrifying in another.
