Spooky in Love Recap Ep 3-4: Is Gang-uk Actually Dead?

Fair warning before anything else — this Spooky in Love recap is stuffed with spoilers for episodes 3 and 4. Because a prosecutor flatlining on a hospital table and then casually appearing in a corridor thirty seconds later is not something I was emotionally prepared for on a Sunday night.

Let’s rewind and do this properly.

Where we left things

Episodes 1 and 2 handed Gang-uk his win: he finally nailed pro golfer Park Seung-jae for the death of Jang Eun-ju, after working out that Seung-jae disguised himself to move her body into a hotel water tank. Yeo-ri got there at the same moment by talking to Eun-ju’s ghost, which annoyed Gang-uk enormously. Then a wedding invite and a business meeting dragged them both to Jeju, a booking mix-up put them in the same bed, and episode 2 ended with the pair going over a cliff into the sea.

Jeju closes out, and Da-mi finally gets to leave

Episode 3 picks up in the water, exactly where we were dumped. They surface, they’re pulled out, and Gang-uk is stuck on one detail he can’t shake — she wouldn’t take his hand. Not couldn’t. Wouldn’t. He files that away.

The flashback fills in Da-mi’s last minutes, and it’s uglier than I expected. Da-mi had confronted designer Hae-na for stealing her haenyeo-inspired dress design — a design that mattered because Da-mi’s grandmother actually dove. Hae-na’s response was to call her a nobody and shove her under. Both phones went into the water during the struggle, which is the only reason Yeo-ri could hand Gang-uk anything worth arresting someone over.

Hae-na is taken in, still performing innocence, already telling her secretary to find out who did this to her. Da-mi’s spirit finally goes. Yeo-ri thanks Gang-uk, tells him to run the rest of the case without her, and leaves.

Small thing that is absolutely not a small thing: on his way off the island, Gang-uk swears he spots his grandmother. She denies it, insists she’s at home, and warns him to stay away from the sea. That’s twice now this woman has issued a warning that turned out to be load-bearing. Keep her in your peripheral vision.

Grandma sets a two-month deadline

Back in Seoul, Chairwoman Baek confirms Yeo-ri is her biological granddaughter and the one she wants running the group — with a condition. Marry Kang Min-hwan. Within two months. No discussion.

The stated reason is that a married heiress stops the ghost gossip. The unstated reason is that a married heiress is harder to remove. Ha-ri and her mother Gye-hee are furious, Gye-hee is off trying to build her own bridge to Min-hwan, and Ha-ri goes to visit Seung-jae in prison, where he swears Yeo-ri framed him and promises to hand her Reina Hotels once he’s out. She believes him. That’s the whole problem.

Ha-ri then corners Yeo-ri and threatens to tell Chairwoman Baek that the ghosts never stopped — which sends us into the flashback that made me put my drink down. Baek once hired a shaman to burn the curse out of Yeo-ri. The ritual was brutal. It didn’t work. And Yeo-ri looked her grandmother in the face afterwards and said she was cured, because watching Baek worry was worse than seeing the dead.

Then we cut to Yeo-ri in her own hotel, gloves on, watching couples celebrate, eating alone. Nobody says anything. It’s the loudest scene in the episode.

The soju night everyone is screenshotting

So she drinks. A lot. Gang-uk happens to be at the same barbecue place with colleagues, and drunk Yeo-ri announces to the entire restaurant that the two of them shared a bed. The table reaction alone is worth the rewatch.

It escalates into full chaos — she talks openly about seeing ghosts, grabs at his shirt, and tears it. The gloves come off at the table and stay there. Later, while she’s flagging a taxi, Gang-uk runs after her to return them, she stumbles into the road, and he catches her bare hand to pull her back.

That’s it. That’s the whole trigger. He saves her life and infects himself doing it, and neither of them notices.

I did actually laugh out loud at the follow-up: guilty Yeo-ri sends him an absurdly expensive replacement shirt, he refuses to keep it, her assistant refuses to take it back, so he turns up at her house that night — and she only then remembers she gave him her address while wasted.

The kid on his shoulders

Then Gang-uk sees a small boy nobody else can see, assumes it’s a prank, goes home, and the boy is there too. He calls Yeo-ri in genuine panic. She confirms what he already suspects, tells him her touch does this and that it wears off in roughly a month, and episode 3 ends with the two of them agreeing to help the kid. The reveal that the boy has been riding on his shoulders the entire time is the biggest jump the show has landed so far.

Any Spooky in Love ep 3 review that treats this as a comedy beat is missing what the show is doing. Gang-uk doesn’t argue. He doesn’t demand proof. He’s terrified and he still believes her, and that’s the exact moment the drama stops being about a skeptic.

Episode 4 goes somewhere much darker

Straight into the worst errand of their lives. Yeo-ri offers her hand, the boy takes it, and he leads them into the woods to an overturned car.

His body is inside. His father is alive, barely, and Yeo-ri lies to his face and tells him his son is fine. The paramedics load the dad up. Then the boy asks her to look again — and his little sister is still in the wreck, alive.

The flashback shows him shielding her on impact, right after their dad had told him to look after her. He stayed behind to finish the job. He waves at Yeo-ri and Gang-uk, and he’s gone.

Any Spooky in Love episode 4 recap that skips how quiet this sequence plays is doing it dirty. There’s no score swelling at you. I’ve rewatched it twice and I’m not doing it a third time.

The confession, and the hand he takes on purpose

Gang-uk finally asks. Yeo-ri tells him about the yacht accident in her college years — going into the water, nearly drowning, and the person who went in after her not coming back up. His spirit was the first she ever saw. Every rumour about her started there.

Gang-uk asks how long he’s stuck like this. About a month, she says, based on everyone before him.

And then he takes her hand anyway. Knowing exactly what it does. He’d already been cursed by accident; this time he chooses it, and tells her she’s carried enough. Small gesture, enormous scene.

His week goes badly regardless — sleep paralysis, a woman’s ghost trailing him everywhere — so Yeo-ri coaches him on salt, strong-smelling food, and pretending not to be afraid. Then she tells him they can’t see each other again, and if they cross paths they should act like strangers. Meanwhile Ha-ri clocks that Min-hwan is fixated on Yeo-ri, works out that the ghosts never stopped, and runs straight to Seung-jae with it.

That ending

Seung-jae gets pulled off Gang-uk’s docket and walks free. On his release day he threatens Gang-uk using Yeo-ri’s name, then sends men to grab her and stage a drug overdose — which would hand Reina to Ha-ri, and Ha-ri to him.

Gang-uk’s grandmother turns up, feeds him, tells him not to go out at night. Third warning. He goes anyway.

He gets Yeo-ri out. He’s rounding the car to the driver’s side when Seung-jae drives straight into him. At the hospital he stops responding, and Yeo-ri is standing there being told he’s gone — and then he’s next to her in the corridor.

Here’s why I don’t buy the ghost reading: she hugs him. She’s touching him. That contact is the one rule this show has never once bent, and it does not work on the dead. My guess is he’s in a coma and briefly out of his body, and the “curse” is now running in reverse.

What this sets up

Min-hwan’s adoption backstory — Yeo-ri covering his ears in high school so he wouldn’t hear it — reads less like a cute flashback and more like a debt he’s planning to collect. Seung-jae attempted murder in front of witnesses, so his father’s protection racket is about to be tested properly. And Gang-uk’s grandmother is three for three on warnings nobody heeds.
