The Perfect Lie Cast Characters: Who’s Who Before Episode 1

Written by Huzaifa

Yoo Yeon-seok plays cardiac surgeon Min Jun-ho, Seo Hyun-jin plays school librarian Kang Ji-seon, and Ok Ja-yeon plays investigating detective Lee Hwa-young. Those are the three names to remember first. The Perfect Lie cast characters guide below explains the family, workplace and marriage connections surrounding them before the October 30, 2026 premiere.

A familiar pairing can be a dangerous thing in a thriller. You recognise the faces, remember the chemistry, and start trusting people before they’ve earned it.

That’s why I’m interested in The Perfect Lie. Yoo Yeon-seok and Seo Hyun-jin reunite after Dr. Romantic, but their new characters give conflicting accounts of the same encounter. Affection for the actors won’t help us settle that argument.

This is a pre-premiere guide based on the announced character descriptions and promotional material. No episode twists or guesses about the culprit.

The Perfect Lie cast characters at a glance

Here’s the quick answer to who plays whom in The Perfect Lie. These are seven confirmed characters worth knowing before episode 1, rather than an exhaustive list of every credited appearance.

ActorCharacterRole and connection
Yoo Yeon-seokMin Jun-hoCardiac surgeon and widowed father; his account conflicts with Ji-seon’s
Seo Hyun-jinKang Ji-seonElementary-school teacher-librarian; goes on a date with Jun-ho
Ok Ja-yeonLee Hwa-youngDetective investigating the central case
Im Sung-jaePark Seok-guNaval officer and Hwa-young’s husband
Kim Ji-hyunKang Ji-eunJi-seon’s older sister; anesthesiologist at Jun-ho’s hospital
Lee Chun-heeKim Hyung-sooJi-eun’s husband and Ji-seon’s brother-in-law
Oh Dong-minPark Joong-hyunJi-seon’s college ex-boyfriend and longtime friend; hospital administrator

You may also see Jun-ho written as Joon Ho, Ji-seon as Ji Sun, and Im Sung-jae as Im Seong Jae. Those are different English spellings of the same names, not extra characters.

Yoo Yeon-seok as Min Jun-ho: the man people already trust

Jun-ho is a cardiac surgeon raising his son alone after his wife’s death. His public image is reassuring: a capable doctor, a devoted parent, someone other people believe.

The promotional stills give that image a sharp interruption. One places him in his professional medical setting; another puts him alone in an interrogation room. Same man. Very different expectations.

That contrast is what interests me about the casting. The opening question isn’t simply whether Jun-ho can sound convincing. It’s whether everyone around him has already decided he is convincing because they know his job and his reputation.

Watch for: the difference between someone describing Jun-ho’s character and someone providing evidence about the event. A colleague saying he’s dependable answers one question. It doesn’t automatically answer the other.

Seo Hyun-jin as Kang Ji-seon: someone determined to be heard

Ji-seon works as an elementary-school librarian and teacher. Her announced description presents someone attentive to the intentions behind people’s words, whose ordinary routine changes after her date with Jun-ho.

There’s also a straightforward school connection: Jun-ho is a parent at the school where she works.

The early material contrasts Ji-seon’s gentle classroom presence with her forceful insistence that she is telling the truth. I’m particularly interested in how Seo Hyun-jin handles that transition. A character trying to make herself understood can become more urgent with every unsuccessful attempt.

That gives us something specific to watch beyond whether she appears upset.

Watch for: what Ji-seon actually says happened, and whether the people listening engage with that account. Her emotional state and the accuracy of her testimony are separate questions. I hope the drama gives both the attention they deserve.

Ok Ja-yeon as Lee Hwa-young: the investigator between them

Hwa-young is a lieutenant in the Women and Juvenile Affairs Division at Sangcheon Police Station. She investigates the case involving Jun-ho and Ji-seon, with the promotional description stressing her reason, responsibility and principles.

She’s the character I most want to follow closely.

The two leads arrive with their own accounts. Hwa-young has to examine them. That makes her questions potentially as revealing as their answers: which detail does she return to, what does she need corroborated, and when does she challenge an assumption?

Those are viewing questions, not confirmed episode events. But they explain why I wouldn’t treat her as a minor addition to a two-star vehicle.

Watch for: her investigative reasoning. A convincing detective should help us understand why a detail matters, even when the larger answer remains hidden.

Kim Ji-hyun as Kang Ji-eun: the sister with a workplace connection

Of all The Perfect Lie cast characters, Ji-eun has the connection I’d underline first: she is Ji-seon’s older sister and an anesthesiologist at the same hospital as Jun-ho.

That places her close to both sides of the central conflict before any investigation starts.

It’s an excellent source of potential tension. Knowing someone through work produces one kind of familiarity; being someone’s sibling produces another. Neither gives a person unlimited knowledge, but both can make it difficult to admit what they don’t know.

The announced setup says Ji-eun is shaken by the incident involving her younger sister. It doesn’t tell us how she will respond to every development.

Watch for: how her family and professional relationships influence what she asks, believes or hesitates to say. She’s my supporting character to keep an eye on.

Lee Chun-hee as Kim Hyung-soo: part of Ji-seon’s family circle

Hyung-soo is married to Ji-eun, making him Ji-seon’s brother-in-law. He is introduced as an affectionate husband and father who also looks after his sister-in-law.

His place in the story is easy to remember: Ji-eun connects the hospital and family; Hyung-soo belongs to that family support system.

I’m glad the announced ensemble includes this domestic side. A dispute doesn’t stop affecting people when they leave a police station. It follows them into conversations with relatives who want to help and may not know how.

That’s where a supporting performance can make a thriller feel personal.

Watch for: what support means in practice. Listening, reassuring and speaking on someone else’s behalf can have very different effects. We’ll need the episodes to see how Hyung-soo handles it.

Im Sung-jae as Park Seok-gu: Hwa-young’s perceptive husband

Seok-gu is a naval lieutenant commander and Hwa-young’s husband. His character description gives him an unusual distinguishing trait: a strong ability to notice when other people are lying.

An intriguing skill for this particular story.

Still, I wouldn’t turn that promotional description into a promise that he can solve everything by studying someone’s face. The interesting dramatic question is how his judgment will hold up when placed beside the investigation.

His marriage also gives Hwa-young a personal connection outside her work.

Watch for: the basis of his confidence. If Seok-gu suspects someone, I’ll want to understand what he has noticed. Being perceptive becomes much more interesting when the audience can examine the reasoning.

Oh Dong-min as Park Joong-hyun: the ex who stayed a friend

Joong-hyun dated Ji-seon during college, and they have remained friends. He also works in the administration department of Jun-ho’s hospital.

That second detail deserves attention. He has a personal history with one lead and a workplace connection to the other, although that doesn’t establish how close he is to Jun-ho.

It’s tempting to see “ex-boyfriend” and immediately start predicting jealousy. I’d hold off. The confirmed description establishes an easygoing personality and an ongoing friendship, not a romantic rivalry or hidden motive.

Watch for: what he knows firsthand. Shared history can give a character useful context, but context and direct knowledge of a particular incident aren’t interchangeable.

The relationships to remember before episode 1

The Perfect Lie cast relationships become much easier to follow when you separate the personal links from the investigation.

  • Jun-ho and Ji-seon: their date leads into the central clash of accounts.
  • Ji-seon, Ji-eun and Hyung-soo: younger sister, older sister and brother-in-law.
  • Ji-seon and Joong-hyun: former college couple who remain friends.
  • Jun-ho, Ji-eun and Joong-hyun: connected through the same hospital.
  • Hwa-young and Seok-gu: married couple; Hwa-young investigates the case.

My main takeaway from this The Perfect Lie actor character guide is how much the circles overlap. The people hearing about the case may already know someone involved. That gives the drama room to explore how familiarity shapes belief, without needing to make every supporting character secretly suspicious.

What fans are actually anticipating

In r/KDRAMA’s teaser-poster discussion, several commenters expressed confidence in Seo Hyun-jin’s choice of projects, while another celebrated the leads working together again. One reaction captured a particularly familiar fan feeling: enthusiasm for her next project alongside missing her in romantic comedy.

That’s a small discussion, not a verdict from the entire fandom. But it shows the pull of this casting clearly: people are bringing affection and expectations with them.

I get it. The reunion is an immediate attraction. My bigger reason to watch, though, is what happens when those familiar faces make us uncomfortable instead of reassuring us.

For anyone saving this The Perfect Lie cast characters guide before the premiere, episode 1 is scheduled for October 30 at 9:50 p.m. KST on MBC. MBC’s official drama page carries the broadcaster’s promotional material.

Which character are you most curious about before episode 1: Ji-seon, Jun-ho, investigator Hwa-young, or Ji-eun caught between family and work?
