An eighteen-year-old girl wants something extraordinary to happen to her. An eighteen-year-old boy wants to escape a life that’s already been decided for him. That’s the actual tension behind Summer Vacation (여름방학), a 2026 Korean youth romance that brings these two frustrated strangers together in a rural village instead of pretending a pretty holiday setting is enough to carry a love story.
Cho Yi-hyun plays Kim Ha-yeon, a high school student tired of feeling overlooked at home and out of place among her classmates. When she accompanies her father to Upo Village during summer break, she isn’t walking into a carefully planned adventure. She’s stepping into a completely different set of expectations, and the show’s mysterious premise suggests that a change of scenery might change considerably more than her routine.
The boy she meets there is Jo Yu-gyeom, played by Jung Jin-young of B1A4. He’s the eldest grandson of a traditional family, living under rules that make his days feel repetitive even though he has a talent for swimming. Ha-yeon dreams of breaking out of ordinary life; Yu-gyeom is already surrounded by a world that insists he stay exactly where he is. It’s a good contrast for a romance, because neither needs a perfect stranger to rescue them so much as someone who understands the wish to choose differently.
The setting does more than provide scenic beaches and lush summer greenery. Upo Village puts Ha-yeon on unfamiliar ground while keeping Yu-gyeom close to the family pressures that shape his behavior. Early promotional material shows an awkward first encounter and hints at a mystery beyond the usual summer crush. How much of that mystery is truly supernatural, rather than simply unexplained, isn’t something the available early evidence settles.
Hong Ye-ji appears as Seong Sae-ryeong, while Ryu Hae-jun plays Kim Jeong-yeon. Both belong in the cast guide, but it would be premature to invent their motives, relationships or a love triangle before the drama makes those connections clear. The central pairing is still the most useful starting point: two teenagers who approach the same summer with very different kinds of loneliness.
There’s also an unusual real-world wrinkle. Summer Vacation was filmed years before its October 2026 premiere, with production beginning in 2022 and finishing in 2023. That delay shouldn’t be confused with a story twist or a criticism of the finished episodes. It simply explains why this new release has a longer production history than many viewers might expect.
The planned run is ten episodes, airing on Mondays and Tuesdays, so this isn’t an endless commitment. As of October 28, only the opening two episodes have been listed on Viki, and a trustworthy full-series pacing verdict isn’t possible yet. I’d try the premiere for the village encounter and the push-and-pull between Ha-yeon’s restlessness and Yu-gyeom’s obligations, rather than assume the mystery or romance has already reached its peak.
Who should put it on their list? Viewers who enjoy first-love stories, countryside settings and a little uncertainty threaded through youthful romance have a concrete reason to be curious. Anyone wanting a fully confirmed happy ending, rapid-fire action or an established supernatural rulebook should wait until more episodes are out; those promises would be guesses right now.
What makes this one worth tracking isn’t just the summer glow. Cho Yi-hyun’s Ha-yeon wants a life that feels like her own, and Jung Jin-young’s Yu-gyeom has to work out what freedom would even look like inside his family’s expectations. Whether their meeting becomes an ordinary romance or something stranger is the question Summer Vacation has actually earned the right to ask.
