Biography

In My Name, Do Gang-jae doesn't need many scenes to make a room feel dangerous. Chang Ryul plays him as a former gang member whose humiliation curdles into revenge. Now put that man beside Hwang Yeo-hwan, the thoughtful psychiatrist he plays in Daily Dose of Sunshine. Few comparisons better explain his career: he keeps finding characters whose public face hides something more difficult.

Born on February 14, 1989, Chang Ryul (장률) worked through smaller screen parts before wider recognition arrived. Cine21 records a credit in the 2013 film Banggwanja (방관자). Later films included Master and Detective K: Secret of the Living Dead, while television brought roles in Arthdal Chronicles and Secret Boutique in 2019. In Arthdal Chronicles, he played Asa Yon, part of its complicated religious and political world. This was a career taking shape in supporting parts, not an overnight breakthrough.

The shift came with Netflix's My Name in 2021. Do Gang-jae is a violent figure in the criminal world surrounding Yoon Ji-woo, played by Han So-hee. He begins within that hierarchy, then becomes a threat driven by resentment. Gang-jae is desperate to recover status; his anger keeps exposing the insecurity beneath it. The performance earned Chang Ryul a Best New Actor nomination at the first Blue Dragon Series Awards in 2022.

He followed it with two unsettling characters in 2022. In The Golden Spoon, Seo Jun-tae is the polished leader of the wealthy Amicus circle, his courtesy concealing ruthless ambition. In TVING's Bargain, Ko Geuk-ryeol gets caught in an organ-trafficking nightmare interrupted by an earthquake. The survival thriller gives its actors little room to relax. Bargain later won Best Screenplay at Canneseries in 2023, an award for the production's writing rather than Chang Ryul's individual acting.

Then came a change of temperature. Netflix's Daily Dose of Sunshine (2023) cast him as Hwang Yeo-hwan, a psychiatrist who has known nurse Jung Da-eun and Song Yu-chan since school. He also has a romantic storyline with nurse Min Deul-re, played by Lee E-dam. After characters defined by suspicion and revenge, Yeo-hwan's work depends on noticing another person's distress. It's a warmer register without feeling like a completely different actor.

His first leading role and first historical drama arrived in 2025 with TVING's The Scandal of Chunhwa. As Choi Hwan, a wealthy merchant with a flirtatious reputation, he becomes entangled with Princess Hwa-ri, played by Go Ara. A historical romantic lead asks for a different rhythm from a gangster: charm matters, but so does the gradual exposure of what Hwan keeps hidden. Chang Ryul said in interviews that he was drawn to the character's developing inner life.

Love Me, which aired from late 2025 into January 2026, took that romantic thread into contemporary family drama. He played Ju Do-hyun opposite Seo Hyun-jin's Seo Jun-kyung. Do-hyun's relationship carries complications involving his son, so the part isn't simply about being an appealing love interest. It's about what honesty costs when two people seek closeness but already have responsibilities. Unlike Gang-jae's violent search for control, Do-hyun's conflict makes room for accountability.

In October 2026, Chang Ryul returned to open rivalry as Cha Woo-jin in JTBC's Final Table, which premiered on October 24. Woo-jin is a perfectionist chef and restaurant owner competing against Kang Han, played by Ahn Hyo-seop. Here pride and precision replace the criminal underworld. He also plays Young-min opposite Han Sun-hwa's Sang-mi in The Table: Day and Night, which opened the 2026 Busan International Film Festival and is scheduled for Korean theaters on November 4.

The through-line isn't a neat move from villains to nice guys. It's how often his characters protect an image of themselves: an enforcer demanding respect, an insider hiding his motives, a merchant performing confidence, a chef insisting on perfection. Chang Ryul's performances keep testing what that image conceals. That makes his next casting choice more interesting than any easy label about the kind of actor he is.
